2011 Dinner and Awards

On Sunday 18th September the Band gathered at Beck’s Ale House in Sydenham for some much needed post contest socialising.

Our patron, David Cox together with his wife Fiona was able to share the evening with us.

After the meal the Band was able to honour three long standing members.

Steve Griffin who has held both the principal horn and principal euphonium seats has decided to take a break from banding. Griff played first Baritone for the Band at the contest and performed with distinction. Griff is a former national champion and hopefully will only be away for a short time.

Ron Bremner was awarded a BANZ certificate to recognise sixty years in banding. In presenting Ron with his award Band chairman Kevin McMorran said that Ron with his wife Trish were tremendous supporters of the Band. Ron for many years has been in charge of stage set up at the contest as well as undertaking many other tasks.

Kevin went on to say that Ron was a special part of the Band and that his work was deeply appreciated by all.  The Band took the chance to present some flowers to Trish Bremner in recognition of her support for the Band.

The other member to be honoured was Bob Grimwood who was awarded life membership of the Band. Bob has been a stalwart player and for a long time was our only bass player.

Bob has had a stellar career as a player. Selected for several National Bands, Bob has won both the open Eb Bass title and the master’s title while playing for Canterbury Brass.  Apart from playing Bob has also contributed much to the Band in other areas.

Kevin McMorran described Bob as an outstanding player as well as a loyal and dedicated member. Bob originally hails fromEnglandwhere he played for the West Hartlepool Old Operatic Silver Prize Band. While the Band never reached the heights playing wise it certainly must have had one of the longest names.  The Band also presented Norma Grimwood with flowers in recognition of her support for the Band.
