A message from our Patron

This message is all about pride and professionalism.

There is no doubt that at practice, in concert, on street marches and in solo or small group performances, Canterbury Brass performs with pride.

The Musial Director leads, encourages and cajoles, with at all times a focus on perfection. With Canterbury Brass perfection in visual presentation, musical performances, administration and above all community involvement is achievable, as its enviable contest and community event record shows.

They seek support. They return that support very appropriately. They have great respect for those who support them.

David Cox MONZ, FNZIM

Canterbury Brass

Canterbury Brass is currently seeking sponsorship for each of its thirty seats, and invite you to be a part of it.

Canterbury Brass is an A Grade Brass Band based in Christchurch. We are an active band that enjoys sharing our music with the community in which we live.We perform a wide variety of musical styles, including:

  • Jazz/swing
  • Classical
  • Music from movies and musicals
  • Bavarian
  • Marches

In addition to:

  • Music composed for brass

We are a very active brass band. Our performances over recent years have been extensive. We are confident that the band is seen and heard by over 100,000 people annually. Canterbury Brass is a strong marching band and has proudly held the New Zealand National Marching Champions title on two occasions.

We participate every year in the Smiths City Santa Parade. Some of our recent performances include:

  • Crusaders and Canterbury home games
  • Summertimes events including Sunday Bandstand, Teddy Bear's Picnic, Starry Nights and Classical Sparks
  • Guest appearances with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
  • Christchurch Anzac Day Citizens' Service in the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral
  • National and Provincial Brass Band Championships

In addition to:

  • Our own concerts

Dwayne Bloomfield is the band's current Director of Music. After spending 26 years with the NZ Army Band, Dwayne also developed an interest in arranging and composing. He has now become internationally know as a composer. One of Dwayne's most recent compositions was 7.1 in remembrance of the Christchurch Earthquakes.

Dwayne aims to lead Canterbury Brass to the forefront of New Zealand banding in the next two years.

Canterbury Brass is currently working to establish a development programme encompassing individual and group tuition in brass and percussion. This programme will be at the primary and secondary school level, as well as adult learners. We believe this programme will feed talented players into Canterbury Brass, and strengthen brass banding in Christchurch.
